) s- v  l9 g8 D! d6 U2 m# G

Love: 爱

It's nowhere near the same: 大相径庭、完全不同

$ k% i" W; |" F( ?& v* K& l+ L0 M2 i4 N7 M; w; e: d# J; ?

8 f! _# ?/ V$ \+ G
比如:

  F5 x5 z' K5 z5 d6 M9 o4 e
I love you",

% V$ E% _4 z0 C# G. j+ c- Z9 D
1 `# O% o- r& P

& ]! W, q& J- ?: M% ?
"So sweet!"

"I love you too!"

( W  S& t; B7 `5 W
' v8 E' n8 u. _) @) G
: v" w& n2 i& K9 K" j: V+ g

' k( O+ j9 s5 s) R7 M# m
Love

& Z; ?1 I: F. }- w% m, d/ r: O3 E9 J
# }% d. r/ H( E. V
7 R; I3 W" n2 [4 k# h
Then I go and spoil it all by saying something stupid like "I love you"

2 X7 x  f4 F' q, J6 ^$ \
Why is saying "I love you"stupid?

6 e, H8 h4 I0 ?; q8 d" _" i' a* n
Isn't it sweet?

: i8 }9 I( z" O3 d! c) j$ N! p
We call it "drop the L bomb": 英语有个说法,叫扔L炸弹

0 Q7 Z$ j" E& c

- g8 N  X2 [. x. n9 `. s+ T  r8 T

# t% f. K+ g8 `7 [1 p7 U. ]% e% ~+ s# v: C0 ^% w

, I. G9 V  X; f" h$ i9 _% l2 P
/ h; R3 i- N4 Q* R3 B" t

. ^. I; Z' t9 i1 R! y  r' ^

8 L* G# D/ B9 B2 U
- i& S& K% N# F. X

% S& \7 ^" L! m! J: W# O
上面这些日常情况,中文基本都会用“喜欢”表达情绪;
/ z  ~1 t) l1 e4 V( W. i5 r

/ F" y, R0 h5 ]0 |8 V/ K) j0 [1 D
如果用“I like it", 反而容易造成误解!

. N; m; l: ~8 c. y

: ]8 B; p9 i1 ?# v2 w' I' G) g8 @8 ~9 \0 r: u4 e% b7 u/ U
Why?

; N% D* A' k$ Z
"I like it" or "I like it very much" doesn't sound very sincere or enthusiastic: 我喜欢、我非常喜欢在英语里听起来反而有点不真诚、没什么热情
$ J  q; U; G: ?* Q2 i6 S! n: X
3 e$ Q  m+ @5 A- K

# q1 E" [3 K' a  t

0 `1 C) U% f7 \+ }
I don't really say it in Chinese though, feels really  awkward: 但是我不太用中文跟他们说“妈妈爱你”,也觉得很尴尬

1 m% |/ M' ]- z. ~; f! f6 p
Maybe when it's not your mother tongue, it's easier to say: 有可能不是自己的母语,反而更容易说
  U, y$ }& r, e! a$ d" f! X
/ E, O* p' b. J. P6 d. S9 B
, g4 M/ |/ t( k+ r( j, v

8 m) n" q1 J$ q; U1 R

/ d, |6 y, H6 H# V
WASPs don't say it as much: 英国血统的美国人好像没那么常说“I love you"

/ e) ]8 K7 a4 @8 D! A1 w* G5 A- f
Sons don't say "I love you" as much as daughters: 还有儿子,也不像女儿那么愿意对父母说"I love you"

) n, f( d  `3 j5 o) W4 A
Girls, even grown-up girls say it all the time to their parents: 女儿,就算是成年了,也常跟父母说“I love you"
* C8 G8 W$ o4 c! W  T; |

8 P( g5 l/ r) @1 z9 _$ f5 {! W+ ^( j

. h5 _6 s$ K: }

$ X/ D2 O: b, i
To hate a person?
Be careful with using "hate" on people: 用在人身上,要特别谨慎
7 B! R6 |# ]5 u" i! C
You can use it jokingly with your friends: 也许跟很好的朋友,可以用调侃的语气
